Hoya care guides
How to grow hoyas well indoors: light, water, potting mix, humidity, pots and supports. Each guide starts with a short answer and cites its sources.
Light for hoyas: how much they need and what the leaves tell you
Hoyas need bright light, and insufficient light is the cause the RHS gives for a hoya that fails to flower. Gentle direct sun, such as morning sun or sun through a sheer curtain, suits most plants; hot midday sun in summer can scorch the leaves. For Hoya carnosa, Missouri Botanical Garden recommends at least half a day of direct sun.
Watering hoyas: the soak-and-dry pattern, season by season
Water thoroughly when the potting mix has nearly dried, let the excess drain away, and never leave the pot standing in water. From October to February, water more sparingly but do not let the mix dry out completely. Hoyas are epiphytes and do not tolerate soggy mix or wet roots.
